$6,410.10 Late Pick 4 Hit On a $36 Ticket!

Clients and handicappers celebrated a huge day on Thursday, July 2 when cashing in on a $6,410.10 late Pick 4 play on a $36 ticket, released right here by http://www.horseracing-selections.com The day started on a positive note when Railbird Play Lunch Money rolled home at $10.20 and $3.80. The fun began when the 5th race opened with Enriched winning the first leg at $10. Laura's Pleasure took down the 6th at $8.80 and when Bankroll Play Cleisthenes failed to run a jump, it was I'll Show Them who kept the ticket alive at $15.40. Things really got interesting in the 8th when Little Dodger posted a nose win over Deceptively at $50.20. Little Dodger was also on our Horse to Watch list, a free service offered by our handicappers and posted on the website. For a $36 investment, clients came walking away from the windows with $6,410.10! Not a bad days work. Here was our suggested Pick 4 ticket.

Zenyatta wins again as does Rachela Alexandra! Now what?

Okay, Now what? Both star ladies won and beat nothing. Zenyatta beat up on a field of six very outclassed fillies and mares and Rachel Alexandra beat two rivals in a complete set-up race. So the question looms, now what? Will they continue on a path to miss each other or will they somehow come together and give the racing world what it needs, a match-up contest with these two amazing horses facing each other, eye-to-eye. Don't count on it happening however as the horse racing Gods seem hell bent on missing a golden opportunity to attract new fans to the sport. ... Back to Rachel Alexandra for a moment. Where does she go from her 19-1/4 length victory facing two rivals. It's obvious nobody in her 3-year-old class wants to face her and when she meets a pair of rivals who go :22 2/5, :44 3/5 and 1:08 4/5 with her laying off the pace, who can beat her? If races like this are in her future, they'll have to put the grandstand on her back to make the race interesting for fans to watch. ... Same goes for Zenyatta. Carrying 129lbs in her latest romp, she looked like she could go around the plastic track again and still win. Something is gotta give with one if not both of these camps.

The week in review at Hollywood Park ...

Thursday's card (06/25) saw Taro (8th) win in her debut for trainer Clifford Sise under David Flores. The two-year-old daughter of Bertrando paid $8.80 to her backers and looked pretty good winning her bow. Follow this gal.

Friday's card (06/26) saw the disqualification of Silent Trick (4th) under Fabian Valdez for trainer Hector Palma. Somebody needs to show this kid how to change sticks as he was whipping Silent Trick left handed while the 3-year-old was coming out on to White Lace Jimmy all the way down the stretch. Easy call here for the stews and expect Valdez to get a vacation for this ride. ... Trainer Julio Canani unleashed a nice one in the 6th race with Cinamon Dove who was winning her local debut since arriving from Gulf Stream Park. Ridden nicely by Valdez, the daughter of Gulch seems to have a nice future. By the way, Valdez didn't need to switch sticks here as the winner drew off at $5.40. ... Carmel Coffee (7th) broke like a shot and never looked back while wiring her rivals here at $6. The daughter of Holy Bull had never showed that kind of speed away from the gate and credit goes to jock Corey Nakatani for the ride, his second time on board.

Saturday's card (06/27) saw Zenyatta (4th) take the Grade I $300,000 Vanity Handicap under regular rider Mike Smith. Carrying career high weight of 129lbs, the 5-year-old mare by Street Cry paid $2.60 and covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48. ... Awesome Gem finally found his way back into the winners circle at $8.40 under Alex Solis. The veteran runner by Awesome Again was winning for the first time in two years for trainer Craig Dollase. ... Pick 6 carryover of $120,267 into Sunday's card.

Sunday's card (06/28) saw Black Mamba (8th) end her losing streak in the Grade II Beverly Hills Handicap as she defended her title under Garret Gomez. Gomez has a way with this John Sadler trained mare as she paid $3.40 for the win. Her last win came back on August 3 when Gomez rode in the John Mabee Handicap at Del Mar.

Day dreaming of Del Mar

Summer has arrived at Hollywood Park and it's always this time of year that thoughts begin to drift towards the summer meeting at Del Mar. And why not? Honestly, how can horsemen and fans not begin to daydream about the Del Mar meeting? Located minutes from the beach, the ocean air and breeze makes for one spectacular day at the races. Del Mar opens it meeting on a Wednesday through Sunday basis, with no more Monday racing. The meet opens on Wednesday July 22 and will close on Wednesday September 9.

The week in review at Hollywood Park

Thursday's card (06/18) saw Ballistic Sue take the opener in impressive style for trainer Peter Miller under Tyler Baze at $7. The daughter of City Zip really but it together while breaking her maiden and should be followed off this effort. She stopped the timer in 1:03.96. ... Pick 6 carryover of $125,415 into today's Pick 6 pool. ... The $70,000-added Robert Kerlan Memorial Handicap (7th) was taken by Delta Storm for trainer Mike Mitchell under Joel Rosario. The 8-year-old gelded son of Storm Boot (Storm Cat) was coming off a vacation since December 18 but was ready to roll in his return. He returned $9.20 to his backers. ... Two day carryover of $522,957 into the Pick 6 for Friday and also $39,575 into the Super High Five pool.

Friday's card (06/19) saw the $70,000-added Great Lady M (1st) go to Porto Marmay at $24.20 for trainer Julio Canani. The 4-year-old filly was ending a 0 for 5 drought in 2009.

Saturday's card (06/20) saw a good looking win by Hunch at $6.40 (7th) for trainer John Sadler. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, the debuting son of Lion Heart (Tale of the Cat) ran down the pacesetters late and drew away for a impressive win. Follow this one. ... The $100,000 Grade III Affirmed Handicap was taken by Grazen who kept his win streak in tact at three in a roll now for trainer Mike Mitchell. Showing speed away from the gate as usual, the son of Benchmark was rated nicely on the lead under Rafael Bejarano and returned $5.20 to his backers. Misremembered (Bob Baffert trainee) was a solid second and both of these colts deserve to be followed as they have talent and hail from good barns.

Sunday's card (06/21) saw the Grade III $100,000 Cinema Handicap go to Oil Man for trainer John Sadler and jock Joel Rosario. The 3-year-old colt by Pyrus (Mr. Prospector) scored for his second straight and looked good in the win. It's obvious he's on the top of his game right now and it will be interesting to see where he surfaces next for his connections. He returned $6.40 to his backers.

Dog days of summer

Just another week of racing in Southern California. Fine weather, okay quality racing, albeit small fields which don't bring much in the way of betting for value. Gone are the competitive races with 12 horse fields. It really makes us oldtimers sad when we think about the good old days of racing. Now we have the current president of the CHRB, John Harris as the lone dissenting vote at the recent CHRB meeting voting in opposition of the 4-day week that was proposed at Hollywood Park. Harris didn't want less racing, citing that if Golden Gate can make it work why not Hollywood Park? Sad truth is that less racing may be good for California right now. Really, who wants to bet on a field with 4-5 horses? What type of gambling value is there for the race fan? Just goes to show you how out of touch the current leadership at the CHRB is. Thankfully the measure was past and Hollywood Park will remain on the 4-day race week. ... Rachel Alexandra worked under the lights at Churchill Downs, a snappy move of 1:12 for 6 furlongs early Monday morning. The temporary lighting system is in place for three upcoming nighttime programs at Churchill Downs.

The week in review at Hollywood Park ...

Thursday's card (06/11) saw the race card go without anything noteworthy to report.

Friday's card (06/12) fans of 'Bears' got a treat in the 2nd race when Running Bear came home at $16.80 for trainer Walther Solis and the first timer Pierre Bear completed the exacta for trainer Dog O'Neill. The exacta returned $38.40 for a buck. Who says hunches don't pay off? LOL ... Pick 6 carryover of $83,719.87 into Saturday's card.

Saturday's action (06/13) saw Obrigado (3rd) take home the winners share of the $100,000 Grade III Round Table Handicap. Trained by Neil Drysdale and ridden by Joel Rosario, the 6-year-old gelding was posting his first win in over a year. He returned $4.20 to his backers. ... David Hofmans stable may have been quiet for awhile but I'll Show Them a $600,000 yearling purchase may change all of that. The 3-year-old gelded son of Smarty Jones made a very impressive showing today, winning in his debut at $10 under Martin Garcia. Beating a very game Gallatin's Run, who won't be a maiden for long, I'll show Them appears to have a very bright future ahead of himself and should be followed up the ladder. ... Eighth race winner, Truest Legend is another potential future star from the barn of Ron Ellis winning here at $5 in ultra game fashion under Victor Espinoza. This one drew off under a hold and won with plenty left in the tank. The 3-year-old colt by Songandaprayer cost $240,000 as a yearling and may have that purchased price recovered shortly if this race is any indication of things to come. ... The Grade II $25,000 Californian was taken by Informed at $30.20. The former $25k claimer is another success story from the Doug O'Neill stable who takes former claimers and moves them way up. Remember Lava Man? Rail Trip, the favorite was a sharp second but just doesn't seem to be the same horse when he doesn't have the lead early on.

Sunday's card (06/14) saw the race card run without anything noteworthy to report. Pick 6 carryover of $125,416 into Thursday's card. Good luck to Pick 6 players!

Belmont Stakes and the week at Hollywood Park

Now that the dust has settled on the 2009 Triple Crown we have to tip our cap to trainer Chip Woolley and rider Calvin Borel for demonstrating some class during the running of the Triple Crown classics. First off, Mind That Bird is a much better colt than we gave him credit for. His efforts in all the Triple Crown races were solid and despite the fact he simply looked like he didn't want to run the 1 1/2 distance on Saturday in the Belmont, he fought gamely to the wire. He deserves some time off now. Classy move by trainer Chip Woolley for giving rider Calvin Borel some time to choose between the ride of either Mind That Bird and Rachel Alexander. Most trainers would have forced the riders hand and made him make his selection right away. Finally, the racing world got to see a class act with Calvin Borel. Not widely known outside the racing world before the Kentucky Derby, the veteran rider certainly is now. ... Rachel Alexandra had her third workout since winning the May 16 Preakness, breezing six furlongs in 1:13.80 early Monday over a fast track at Churchill Downs. Trainer Steve Asmussen said there has been no decision made on where the star filly will race next, but he has mentioned the June 27 Mother Goose at Belmont Park as a possible next start. ... The top four finishers from Saturday's Belmont Stakes are all reportedly doing well while Charitable Man had "a couple of little nicks," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said, but otherwise was fine.

The week in review at Hollywood Park ...

Thursday's card (06/04) saw Classical Slew (3rd) take down the $70,000-added Willard L. Proctor Memorial for trainer Doug O'Neill under Michael Baze. Returning $4.40 to his backers, the son of Bernstein (Storm Cat) remains undefeated in two career starts. ... Giant Gem (7th) continues to impress us with another win since his return. Winning for the third time in six career outings, the Neil Drysdale trainee paid an overlayed $16.60 for the win.

Friday's card (06/05) saw the $70,000-added Manhattan Beach won by Strawberry Tart at $29. Making her second Southern California start, the daughter of Atticus (Nureyev) was winning for the third time in five career starts. Strawberry Tart was ridden by Martin Garcia. ... Pick 6 carryover of $89,027.10 and Super High 5 carryover of $34,223 into Saturday's card.

Saturday's card (06/06) saw Noble Court take down the Grade III $100,000 Ack Ack Handicap run as the 8th race. The John Sadler trainee came rolling home late to post the $9.20 win under Joel Rosario. ... Proving he doesn't need the lead to win, Midships took the Grade I Charles Whittingham Handicap for trainer Robert Frankel. Sitting just off the pace, the son of Mizzen Mist (Cozzene) paid $5 for the win and was ridden by Victor Espinoza. Midships was coming off consecutive wins in the Grade II San Luis Rey and Grade II San Juan Capistrano.

Sunday's card (06/07) saw Patricia's Gem (7th) win for the third time in five career starts for trainer Richard Mandella. The $1,750,000 yearling purchase has always been highly regarded but it wasn't until the daughter of Mineshaft (A.P. Indy) returned from her vacation that she has started to put things together. The win was her third in a row. ... The Grade II $150,000 Hollywood Oaks was won by Carlsbad at $6.20 for trainer Jeff Mullins and jockey Tyler Baze. Starting a new win streak, the daughter of Rocky Bar (In Excess) didn't miss her rival, Witty, who ended her win streak last time in the Grade III Railbird.

Belmont Stakes Week

No hopes this time for a Triple Crown winner, which was the case last year when Big Brown had a chance to take the Triple Crown with a Belmont win. This years Belmont will be wide open but all eyes will be on Mine That Bird now that Rachel Alexandra will not be entered. ... Chocolate Candy and Mind That Bird both drilled on Monday for Saturday's Belmont Stakes. Mind That Bird went in :50 for a half mile drill while Chocolate Candy was clocked in :50.25 for his half-mile spin. Both connections were happy with the drills but it was Mind That Bird's jockey, Calvin Borel who exclaimed "We are going to win it" afterwards. We hope Calvin doesn't mind if we temper our enthusiasm a bit until later on in the week. ... Sorry to hear about the passing of trainer Vincent O'Brien who was regarded by many as the greatest trainer in the history of Thoroughbred racing, died at his home in Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland on Monday morning at the age of 92.

The week in review at Hollywood Park ...

Friday's card (05/29) saw the race week shortened a day with last Monday's Holiday card. Zensational (7th) looked pretty darn good taking home the winners share of the $48k-added purse for trainer Bob Baffert under Victor Espinoza. The ultra speedy son of Unbridled's Song had been worked with by his connections to slow down early and it seemed to have paid dividends here tonight. Breeders' Cup Sprint bound? Zensational paid $2.80 to his backers. ... Super High Five carryover of $32,460.53 into the pool for Saturday.

Saturday's action (05/30) saw the Grade I $250,000 Gamely taken by Magical Fantasy at $14.20 under Alex Solis for trainer Paddy Gallagher. Coming off a game win last time in the Grade II Santa Barbara Handicap, the race public allowed this daughter of Diesis to pay off at 6/1. Visit was the runner-up with Diamond Diva checked in third just ahead of Black Mamba. ... Pick 6 carryover of $124,072 into Sunday's card.

Sunday's action (05/31) saw Necessary Evil, a debuting 2-year-old take down the 4th race at $5.80 under Joel Rosario. The daughter of Harlan's Holiday cost $160k as a yearling and looks to have a very bright future setting a new course record in her debut. Watch this one as she moves up the class ladder. ... The Grade II $150,000 Honeymoon Handicap was taken by Well Monied under Joel Rosario for trainer Howard Zucker. Winning her third in a roll, the daughter of Maria's Mon has now won 3 for 6 lifetime starts and has the makings of a nice one. She paid $4.80 to her backers.

Rene Douglas making some progress

Severely injured jockey Rene Douglas continues to make steady progress after undergoing seven-hour back and neck surgery following a one-horse spill Saturday at Arlington Park, but a long-term prognosis for Douglas's recovery still is murky. Let's hope that Rene is up and about soon. ... Hollywood Park will scale back to a four day week for the remainder of the meeting upon approval from the CHRB. The track will ask the racing board for permission to eliminate racing on five Wednesdays - June 17 and 24 and July 1, 8, and 15 - and run four days a week on a Thursday-through-Sunday basis. "We are certainly going to petition" the racing board, Liebau said. "It's in the best interest of Southern California racing to go with this." The issue will be discussed at the racing board's next meeting at Santa Anita on June 5.

Short week at Hollywood Park

Sad news regarding Rene Douglas, who was involved in a nasty life threatening spill over the weekend at Arlington Park. Douglas, who was a fixture here in the Southern California circuit for years may be paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the spill. Doctors won't know the full result until swelling goes down but after several hours of surgery, Douglas was said to have "experienced some degree of paralysis after surgery." He is responding well after surgery and remains stable. Our thoughts go out to him and his family. ... Due to special Holiday racing on Monday, Memorial Day, Hollywood Park will be dark on Thursday, Racing will resume on Friday at 7:05 P.M. (PST). ... How impressive was Zenyatta's win in the Grade II Milady Handicap on Saturday? More on her win later but can't wait to see if a expected match-up between Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra comes to head in the upcoming Breeders' Cup. That would be an awesome race and great for racing if these two ladies were to butt heads. ... No decision yet as to if Rachel Alexandra will start in the Belmont Stakes after a breeze on Monday. ... More on the Rene Douglas spill. Arlington stewards issued a 30-day suspension Monday against jockey Jamie Theriot for his role in a spill during the Arlington Matron, race 9 here Saturday. Theriot was riding Sky Mom in the Matron. Racing along the rail and just behind eventual winner Euphony turning into the homestretch, Theriot steered out to try and get through a hole between Born to Be and Euphony. Sky Mom bumped into Born to Be, who veered sharply out, clipping heels with fading speed horse Boudoir before going down violently. Born to Be had to be euthanized later Saturday, while her rider, Douglas, suffered a potentially debilitating injury in the spill. ... Jockey Garret Gomez announced he'll be returning to Southern California full time to ride.

The week in review from Hollywood Park ...

Thursday's card (05/21) saw a good looking daughter of Limehouse (Grand Slam) take her debut in the 3rd. Lover's House from the Doug O'Neill stable may have only been winning for $40k maiden claiming but looked like a horse that could be a useful sort down the road. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, the filly paid $3.20 to her backers.

Friday's action (05/22) saw Barry Abrams make the right move when he scratched Hot n' Dusty out of Saturday's Milady Handicap to take the 5th race on Friday night under Alex Solis. The 4-year-old filly paid $5.20 for the win. Abrams, who is known for wheeling his horses back was the talk of several horsemen around the track after the win. "She hasn't scratched for Saturday yet," one veteran horsemen quipped. "Barry wants to see how she comes out of this race."

Saturday's action (05/23) saw the monster mare, Zenyatta take the Grade II $150,000 Milady under veteran rider Mike Smith. Zenyatta remains undefeated with the win and the way she was able to put away her stablemate, Graded-stakes winner Life Is Sweet was scary. 'Sweet was the eventual runner-up but Zenyatta left little doubt as to who was the winner.

Sunday's card (05/24) saw Supermodel take the third for trainer Bruce Headley. Ridden by Alex Solis, the daughter of Yankee Gentleman (Storm Bird) was breaking her maiden in her 4th career start and appears to be on the improve now for her connections. She's always been well regarded so she does bear watching in her next start vs. winners. ... The $100,000 Grade III Laz Barrera Memorial went to Charlie's Moment for trainer Walther Solis under Alex Solis. The gelding returned $15 to his backers. Pick 6 carryover of $109,818 into Monday's Pick 6 pool.

Monday's card (05/25) saw Thorn Song take the $250,000 Grade I Shoemaker Mile under Michael Smith in gutty fashion, outgaming Hyperbaric by a nose at the wire. Thorn Song returned $21.20 and was winning for the eighth time in 27 lifetime starts. race favorite Whatsthescript finished fourth.

Broad Brush euthanized at 26

We are saddened to hear of the passing of former leading sire Broad Brush who was euthanized on May 15 due to the infirmities of old age, Gainesway Farm in Lexington announced today. The Ack Ack horse was 26 and had been pensioned at Gainesway since June 2004. ... Who says a girl isn't good for racing? Ratings and the handle for the Preakness Stakes showed an increase this season largely in part to the presence of the super Filly, Rachel Alexandra. Total wagering on the Preakness itself was $59,726,342, according to Pimlico, a 30 percent gain from the $45,689,562 wagered on the race last year and the second-highest of all time. This year's handle figure was also a 4.7 percent gain from the number posted in 2007, when Street Sense was the 6-5 favorite. In Saturday's race, Rachel Alexandra was the 9-5 favorite among 13 horses. The overnight television rating for NBC's broadcast from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Eastern was a 6.3, up 34 percent compared to the overnight rating of 4.7 last year, according to NBC. ... Racing fans are reminded that Hollywood Park has a new 4-day week starting this week and will now race on a Thursday through Sunday schedule. Hollywood Park will remain open on Wednesday for simulcasting only.

Rachel Alexandra. A super filly?

After watching last Saturday's Preakness Stakes it's hard not to get excited about Rachel Alexandra and her future. She set very rapid fractions, was hooked every step of the way, put away her rivals at the top of the lane and had plenty left to hold off the Kentucky Derby winner Mind That Bird. It was truly an awesome performance by a very talented 3-year-old filly. Whether or not she runs in the Belmont it will be interesting to see where she shows up next and in our mind has very little left to prove. She's one special filly. ... Hollywood Park has opted to go to a 4-day race week, a move we welcome. In an effort to bring quality to the race fields and larger fields, it was a move that was needed. Kudos to track management for addressing and trying to correct the problem. ... Back to the Preakness for a second. We have to also bring some love to the camp of Mind That Bird for his game second in the Preakness. The colt ran a much better race then we thought he would, disproving our theory that his Derby win was a fluke. We give him and his connections credit, he's a much better colt than we initially gave him credit for. ... Still no word on former CHRB guru Richard Shapiro in his alleged keying incident which occurred in the Hollywood Park parking lot. According to a few sources, Shapiro is on eight video tapes keying a car of a current thoroughbred owner, getting into his own car, then exiting his car and keying the car again. Nice huh? And we wonder why California racing is so messed up when the leaders are engaging in practices such as this.

The week in review from Hollywood Park ...

Wednesday's card (05/13) saw Fastongrass win the 4th with a huge overlay win. 4/1 on the morning line, the Julio Canani trainee went postward at 11/1 and rang the bell at $25.40 under Victor Espinoza. ... Mark S the Cooler took down the winners share of the $50,000 purse win a solid win here under Rafael Bejarano. Trained by Doug O'Neill, Mark S the Cooler was winning for the second time in nine lifetime starts.

Thursday's card (05/14) saw Southern Fireball win the 3rd for trainer Doug O'Neill under Rafael Bejarano. The Southern Image filly established a new cushion track record with the win, covering the 4 1/2 furlongs in :50.67 and paid $3.60 to her backers.

Friday's card (05/15) saw Reba Is Tops (7th) take the $60,000 Lawndale for trainer Mark Glatt under Joe Talamo. The 5-year-old mare returned $5.80 to her backers and was winning for the ninth time in 16 lifetime starts. Pick 6 carryover of $103,768 and a carryover of $34,436 into the Super High Five for Saturday's card.

CHRB approves 4 day racing week at Hollywood Park

Hollywood Park has been granted approval by the California Horse Racing Board to adopt a four-day racing week through Sunday, June 14.

As a result, the following changes have been made to the schedule:

There will be simulcast wagering only on Wednesday, May 20; Thursday, May 28; Wednesday, June 3, and Wednesday, June 10. Wednesday, May 27 was originally a dark day and remains a dark day.

Live racing will be conducted Thursdays through Sundays with the exception of a special program MemoriaI Day week on Monday, May 25.

“Hopefully this will result in a better product for our patrons,” track president Jack Liebau said. “Due to the tough economy, the number of horses available to race has been reduced as evidenced by the entry box.”

Preakness owners and trainers a bunch of boobs

It was learned on Sunday that several owners and trainers involved with Saturday's Preakness Stakes were going to attempt to keep the filly Rachel Alexandra out of the race by filling up the entry box so she couldn't draw in to Saturday's race. Horses that are pre-nominated have preference over those that are supplemented. What a disgrace to sportsmanship and just a total lack of concern and respect to the horse racing fan to deny them seeing what could turn out to be a spectacular race. While those same "boobs" now say they won't follow through we hope to see our prediction come through. Rachael Alexandra wins the race and the Kentucky Derby winner, Mine That Bird is nowhere at the finish. ... Rumor has it a ex-CHRB official has been keying cars in the Hollywood Park parking lot and has been observed on security video and ID'ed. LOL Can you believe this? More on this when details are made public but for most of us it really wasn't a surprise to learn. ... Mine That Bird, Pioneerof The Nile and Rachel Alexandra all are making final preparations for the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 16. Mine That Bird was caught in :49.20 under Calvin Borel  and Pioneerof The Nile in :47.60. Two other Preakness candidates also were sent through half-mile breezes on a busy Monday morning. General Quarters, with Justin Court aboard, went in 50.20 seconds, and Flying Private, Jamie Theriot up, went in 48.20. Big Drama, one of only two likely Preakness starters stabled at Pimlico in Baltimore as of Monday morning, had his final work for the race, going a half-mile under John Velazquez in 50 seconds. Both Velazquez and trainer David Fawkes were happy with the work, despite Big Drama jumping marks on the track at about the eighth pole. Rachel Alexandra could very well be on her way to the Preakness after breezing a sharp half-mile in 48.40 seconds early Sunday over a fast Churchill Downs racetrack.

The week in review ...

Wednesday's card (05/06) was run without anything noteworthy to report.

Thursday's card (05/07) was run with three 4 1/2 furlong baby races. ... Golden Doc A (7th) has certainly gone in the other direction now. The one time promising daughter of Unusual Heat has been a shadow of her former self since being purchased by the car dealership owner Ron McCauley. She ran a very dull race here at 9/1. ... Ridemetothemoon a 2-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy) made a nice, promising debut here at $9. Trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Corey Nakatani, she should be followed up the ladder and kept tabs on off this win.

Friday's card (05/08) saw Catsalot take down the 5th at $11. We were impressed once again by jock Brice Blanc who is very patient and can really get a horse to settle and make one run. Blanc is one of many jockeys on this circuit that often get overlooked but could very well be a leading rider at another circuit.

Saturday's card (05/09) saw the gutty veteran Ball Four take it to the undefeated Rail Trip in the Grade II $150,000 Mervyn Leroy Handicap (8th). Going all the way under Joe Talamo, the Patrick Biancone trainee has now won 7 of 25 lifetime and added to his over $600,000 bankroll. While Rail Trip was losing for the first time in six starts, he ran a game race in defeat and never looked like a loser until they crossed under the wire.

Sunday's card (05/10) the 8th race, Grade III $100,000 Railbird was billed as a two horse race and it turned out to be just that as both Witty ($4.80) and Carlsbad ran one-two. Witty, trained by Richard Mandella and ridden by Victor Espinoza is the better bred of the two fillies and cost $400,000 as a yearling with a stud fee of $150,000 by her sire Distorted Humor. Carlsbad's sire, Rocky Bar fetches a stud fee of $2,000.

After this week, http://www.horseracing-selections.com remains on fire with our selections and is hitting at 39.3% (11/28) with winners and a remarkable 79.7% (22/28) in the money with our premium plays. Why not sign up now and start cashing some tickets?

Rachel Alexandra purchased for $10 million

Jess Jackson must have liked what he saw last Saturday when Rachel Alexandra scored in the Kentucky Oaks by 20-1/4 lengths. Wednesday, the owner of Stonestreet Stables wrote a check for $10-million and purchased the filly. Plans are she may be supplemented to the Preakness Stakes in two weeks and take on the boys. Mixed feelings on this as we have also preached keeping fillies with fillies. But this filly seems to be in another league and it may be good for racing to see just how good she really is. More on this later on.

Still reeling over KY Derby winner

We are still shocked by the Kentucky Derby win posted by Mine That Bird last Saturday. We have gone back several times to look for missed "evidence" of a pending win but still can't find any. As a matter of fact, the win is looking more like a fluke than it did minutes after he crossed the finish line. Now we find out that the connections didn't even know they were eligible for the Derby and had planned to run Mine That Bird this weekend. However, when contacted by Kentucky Derby officials that said, "hey your eligible, want to enter"? the connections paid up and went for that long 21 van drive to Churchill. Que the Beverly Hillbillies music now. ... Handle and ontrack attendance continued a downward trend for this years Derby and with the economy being the way it is, not hard to figure. The decline in handle, from $114,557,364 last year to $104,563,501 and the attendance that Churchill reported on Derby day was 153,563, down 2.6 percent compared with 157,770 last year. ... I Want Revenge, who was scratched from the Kentucky Derby on Saturday morning, was being evaluated at the Rood and Riddle equine clinic in Lexington, Ky., on Monday, but regardless of the diagnosis, he will be given "six weeks to two months off on a farm," co-owner David Lanzman said Monday. ... Magna Entertainment Corp., the bankrupt racing company, will seek to sell Santa Anita Park in Southern California and the racing assets of Lone Star Park in Texas in a bid to become solvent, the company said in court filings just prior to a hearing in bankruptcy court on Monday. ... Hollywood Park was able to fill both Wednesday and Thursday cards with what appears to be decent cards for both.

The week in review ...

Wednesday's card (04/29) saw the first-timer Ritzville (2nd) take the 4 1/2 furlong 2-year-old maiden dash for trainer Mike Harrington. The colt by Swiss Yodeler outgamed Harrington's other firster Roman Counsel to the wire and returned $7 under Martin Garcia. ... Carryover of $64,925.43 in the Pick 6 and $51,166.96 carryover in the Super High Five for Friday's action.

Thursday's card (04/20) was canceled when the racing office wasn't able to fill the card.

Friday's action (05/01) was run without anything noteworthy to report at Hollywood Park but how about Rachel Alexandra in the Grade I $500,000 Kentucky Oaks. The daughter of Medaglia d'Oro took home the winners share of the purse with her 20 1/4 length win in what looked to be an effortless performance under Calvin Borel. What a weekend for Borel who took Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

Saturday's card (05/02) saw Mine That Bird ring the 135th Kentucky Derby bell at $103.20 to post the second largest upset in Kentucky Derby history. Sure wish we had something logical to say about his win, but we don't. Still, congratulations go out to the winning connections. Our suggestion to them now is to head to Las Vegas. ... Patricia's Gem (8th) looked impressive winning here, her second start off a layoff under David Flores to return 6.40 for trainer Richard Mandella. The $1,750,000 Keeneland purchase has always been well thought of and may finally start to repay her large purchase ticket price. ... The Grade III $100,000 Wilshire Handicap was taken by Gorgeous Goose at $25.80 taking her first graded race in her career under Corey Nakatani. The Mike Puype trained runner looked good and should be followed off this winning effort.

Sunday's card (05/03) saw perhaps one of the worst riding infractions we have ever seen when Jesus Rios came out aboard Lunch Money (3rd) and caused Warrensgoodwarrior to clip heels and fall. Both the horse and rider Arambula escaped injury but this very dangerous and irresponsible move should get Rios a very long vacation and perhaps even a hefty fine. ... Trainer Ron Ellis appears to have a good one on his hands when Canonize (7th) took down her second win in a roll to remain undefeated. The daughter of Aldebaran (Mr. Prospector)  should be followed up the ladder. ... The Grade III $100,000 Senorita was taken by Mrs. Kipling for trainer Neil Drysdale at $6. David Flores rode the winner and had a nice weekend.

Mine That Bird takes 135th KY Derby. Who?

Yeah, you got it! Mine That Bird a 50-1 longshot who is trained by a trainer that is just as well know as his horse was. The only gelding in the race and a tad light on earnings as well at $374,381, Mine That Bird stopped the timer in 2:02.66 and returned a whopping $103.20 to become the second largest upset in Kentucky Derby history. Calvin Borel rode the winner for trainer Bennie Wooley. While our congratulations go out to the winning connections, we are still trying to figure out how the hell it happened! Safe to say there won't be a Triple Crown winner this year as we'll go on record right now and say his win was a total fluke. Can't wait to see what the Beyers are for this race! :)

Hollywood Park cant fill Thursday card

Hollywood Park won't conduct live racing on Thursday, April 30 it was announced by track officials Tuesday morning. Hollywood Park was unable to fill the Thursday card and was still trying to fill Friday's card as of Tuesday afternoon.

Derby Week and short Hollywood Park fields

Quality Road and Square Eddie are both out of the Kentucky Derby Saturday. While logic and common sense had escaped both camps, the horses decided the outcome here. Quality Road developed another quarter crack (Gee, we saw how well the patch process worked last year with Big Brown) and was declared out on Monday. Square Eddie, who is getting over a "minor cannon bone injury" had heat in his leg Tuesday morning and was also declared a no go. ... Bob Baffert also stated Tuesday morning that Indian Blessing is out of the Grade 1, $300,000 Humana Distaff on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Seems Baffert didn't like the way that Indian Blessing emerged from her drill. Now that is common sense and something that lacks around horse racing at times. Put the well-being of the animal first and simply not greed. Kudos to the newly elected Hall member. ... We have said it before and will go on record saying it again. While we love the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown races, it takes a very special animal to compete and so many of these three-year-olds are simply thrown to the wolves that their careers get destroyed for the greed and glory of the connections. ... Trainer Jeff Mullins continues to play ignorant to the rules and denies any wrong doing with the New York and Kentucky incidents. We at one time had respect for this top notched trainer but not anymore. ... So far the fields at Hollywood Park have been on the short side and we knew they would be going in. At least they have been competitive. But we are worried at the time of this posting that Thursday card (04/30) hasn't been drawn as of yet and it may be they are having problems filling it and that wouldn't be a good thing for only the second week of racing. ... Speaking of good things in racing, has anyone heard of anything lately? ... Nice job by TVG putting the industry and the race fans ahead of the greed. On opening day at Hollywood Park, TVG pulled account wagering from the TVG site while they worked through a disagreement with Hollywood Park. While they showed the races, they simply didn't post any prices. Guess they figure that only TVG account holders should have that information when TVG says it's okay to wager. http:///www.calracing.com is a great place to go to watch the races in Southern California and you don't have to put up with the games and antics of the TVG panel which at times can sound like a high school chat room on the internet. Cal Racing offers post parades and live video of all the action and has expert analysis by respected horse people that conduct themselves in a respectable and professional manner. And guess what? You get this all for FREE too! Want to bet the races, go to another sports book site and wager there and simply watch the races at Cal Racing. It's worth it! :)

The week in review ...

Wednesday's card (04/22) saw the opening day card at Hollywood Park kicked off by the $70,000-added Harry Henson with Backbackbackgone (7th) taking home the winners share of the purse. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano for trainer Peter Miller, the son of Put it Back (Honour and Glory) posted a solid win here at $6.40. Third place finisher and race favorite Wall Street Wonder was virtually eased the final 1/16th mile but was still able to finish third. Joel Rosario felt the colt "go wrong" however Wall Street Wonder walked off under his own power and seemed fine. His condition needs to be followed for next time.

Thursday's card (04/23) saw trainer Mike Harrington unleash a potential monster in Alpine Empire (1st) as the 2-year-old Empire Maker filly crushed her rivals from the rail slot going 4 1/2 furlongs to pay $3.60. The final time of :51 1/5 and the five length win were very impressive when you consider Empire Maker offspring usually get better as the distance increases. ... Impressive and athletic win by 7th race winner AllIcansayiswow who clipped heels at the head of the stretch and nearly fell. Joe Talamo kept his cool and rallied the daughter of Street Cry along the rail to post the win at $21.40. The Patrick Biancone trainee was very impressive and should be followed up the ladder and through her conditions. Pick 6 carryover of $63,471 into Friday's card.

Friday's card (04/24) saw Onetimeatbandcamp (8th) take down the Friday night feature at $7 under Tyler Baze defeating the Richard Mandella returning Kanan Dume in a near wire-to-wire win. ... Norvsky (9th) looked impressive breaking his maiden in the nitecap at $4.

Saturday's card (04/25) was California Bred Day at Hollywood Park and the day started off with the $150,000 B. Thoughtful (1st) as Waveline took home the winners share of the purse under Rafael Bejarano for trainer Ben Cecil at $8.20. ... The $60,000 Alphabet Kisses run as the second race was taken by Woman Warrior at $15.80 for trainer Bruce Headley under Alex Solis. The Headley-trained filly by One Man Army was making her debut this afternoon. ... The $150,000 Fran's Valentine was run as the third race and was taken by Bootleg Annie for Trainer Kathy Walsh and was ridden by Rafael Bejarano. The winner returned $11.80 to her backers. ... The 4th race was the $70,000 Grey Memo and was won by Tribal Justice at $7.20 under you guessed it, Rafael Bejarano for trainer John Sadler. ... Upset in the 5th race run as the $70,000 Warren's Thoroughbreds when Rule the Storm took down the winners share of the purse at $73.80. The winner was handled by Victor Espinoza for trainer Genaro Vallejo. ... The 6th race $200,000 Melair was won by Pretty Unusual at $20 for trainer Barry Abrams and jock Rafael Bejarano whos winning everything this afternoon. ... The $200,000 Tiznow (7th) was won by Liberian Freighter for trainer Neil Drysdale under Rafael Bejarano. ... The $150,000 Khaled (8th) was won by Unusual Smoke for trainer AC Avila and jockey Martin Garcia at $14.40. ... Compari stole the 9th race run as the $250,000 Snow Chief with a wire to wire win under Garret Gomez for trainer Martin Jones. Disappointing run here by Unbridled Roman who just never really looked comfortable. Compari returned $13.20 to his backers. ... Finally we had the 10th race run as the $60,000 NTRA which was taken by Grazen under Garret Gomez at $26.60. The son of Benchmark is trained by Mike Mitchell.

Sunday's card (04/26) saw the classy Glorified make her return in the 7th but the daughter of Honour and Glory really never got involved in her return and checked in well-beaten for the barn of Ron Ellis. Silver Swallow, trained by Bruce Headley rang the bell here at $13.20. ... The Grade III Inglewood Handicap was taken by Madeo for trainer John Shirreffs under jockey Mike Smith. Madeo returned $6.60 for the win.

TVG continues to amaze us

Just when we thought we had seen everything from the morons that bring us TVG they surpassed everything that they have ever done with poor race coverage. When it was announced early on that they were experiencing technical difficulties with wagering at Hollywood Park and that fans couldn't wager on the races at Hollywood Park through TVG, they stopped providing the prices of the winners as if the prices didn't matter! Way to go guys, nice job of covering the races!

Hollywood Park opens on Wednesday

Busy week as Santa Anita closed it's doors on Sunday. Kudos to track management for offering FREE Friday's which turned out to be a very positive promotion and contributed to an upswing in numbers posted by the track. Let's hope this is only the beginning and that next season Santa Anita can expand the promotion to more days and that others will follow suit. ... Oak Tree is in danger of losing the 2009 Breeders' Cup unless an agreement can be put in place by April 30th. Attorneys representing the Breeders' Cup, Magna, and creditors of Magna have been working on a document for several weeks that would protect the current contract for the 2009 event regardless of any transfer or sale of Santa Anita, the officials said. The attorneys have agreed on the language of the document, the officials said, but the proposal still needs the approval of a Delaware bankruptcy court judge, who is juggling a handful of complex proposals and objections related to Magna's bankruptcy plans. ... Congratulations to trainer Bob Baffert for being named to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame on Monday.

The week in review ...

Wednesday's action (04/15) was run without anything noteworthy to report. Pick 6 carryover into Thurday's card of $94,872.

Thursday's card (04/16) saw Silent Stalk take down the 7th race under Tyler Baze for Julio Canani. Returning $7.60 to her backers, Silent Stalk has now won two straight and has hit the board in all eight career starts.

Friday's card (04/17) saw HorseRacing-selections.com clients cash a nice ticket when Bob Benoit came home on top in the 6th race at $36.80. The son of More Than Ready from the David Hofmans stable was ridden perfectly by Aaron Gryder to break his maiden in his eighth career attempt. The 17/1 price was a huge overlay for Bob Benoit who was only 6/1 on the morning line. ... Temple City was much the best in the 7th race as the Carla Gaines trained colt by Dynaformer was checked and steadied repeatedly through the stretch under jock Rafael Bejarano. How many times this meeting has Bejarano given this type of ride to his mounts and yet he still comes out on top in the jockey standings. ... Pick 6 carryover of $93,291 into Saturday's card and a Super High Five carryover of $104,744 into Saturday's card as well.

Saturday's card (04/18) saw Mr. Gruff take down the 7th race, run as the Grade III $100,000 San Simeon Handicap. Trained by Ronald Ellis and ridden by Joel Rosario, the gelded son of Mr. Greeley was posting his third win from six lifetime starts. He paid $7.60 to his backers. ... Just how much the best was Black Mamba in the Grade II $200,000 Santa Barbara Handicap? Carried at least 8-9 wide into the stretch, her rally fell a nose short (see photo finish below) of overtaking winner Magical Fantasy who was ridden perfectly by Alex Solis for trainer Patrick Gallagher.

Sunday's closing day card at Santa Anita (04/19) saw Midships win the Grade II $200,000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap under Victor Espinoza. Trained by Bobby Frankel, Midships wired his rivals without anyone to go out with him to return a very generous $4 for the win. The son of Mizzen Mast was winning for the 4th time in 14 lifetime trips to post.

Hollywood Park opens its 65-day meeting next Wednesday, April 22. First post is 1:00 P.M. ... Papa Clem looked good winning the Arkansas Derby last Saturday for local connections Gary Stute. Gary, the son of longtime trainer Mel Stute , appears to be on the road to Kentucky for the first Saturday in May. ... Old Fashioned, runner-up to Papa Clam, emerged from the race with an injury, underwent successful surgery Tuesday for a "non-displaced slab fracture" to his right knee. Old Fashioned was slated to be released from Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Kentucky on Thursday.

Wednesday's card (04/08) saw Simply Ms. Sassie take the opener for California-bred two-year-old fillies at $51.80 for the connections of Jorge Periban and owners O'Shea and Partridge. ... Malibu Artiste (7th) kept her win streak alive by winning her third in a roll at $6.40.

Thursday's card (04/09) saw Meteore (5th) break his maiden at $6.60 for trainer Richard Mandella under Rafael Bejarano. Good looking win by this son of Pulpit in his sixth lifetime start.

Friday's action (04/10) saw Isipingo take the 7th at the marathon distance of 1 1/2 miles on the turf course under Alex Solis in a driving, exciting finish. Trainer Craig Dollase has done a good job with this guy who was winning for the 4th time in 20 lifetime trips to post.

Saturday's card (04/11) saw the old veteran Shadow of Illinois take the fifth race at $17. Trained by Anthony Saavedra and ridden by Alex Solis, the gelded son of Illinois Storm didn't look his age here as the 9-year-old won  for his 6th win from 34 lifetime starts. ... Battle of Hastings (8th) took down the $70,000 Santa Lucia Handicap and posted his second win in a roll for trainer Jeff Mullins. Nicely ridden by Tyler Baze, the son of Royal Applause returned $4.80 to his backers.

Sunday's card (04/12) saw Gotta Have Her take the winners share of the Grade III $100,000 purse by winning the Las Cienegas Handicap under Tyler Baze at $13.40. Trained by Jenine Sahadi for owners Green Lantern Stables, the daughter of Royal Academy beat the 3/5 favorite Tuscan Evening in impressive fashion this afternoon. ... Witty (8th) looked good winning from the rail slot and remains undefeated for Richard Mandella. The filly by Distorted Humor returned $4.40 to her backers.
